The Villager’s Dryer Vent Calculator

There are many things that can affect how often you should clean your dryer vent, including the type of laundry you are drying, how long your duct run is, how many bends are in your duct run, the type, age, and condition of your dryer, and even the weather outside.  This is why you should look at this calculator as a general rule of thumb and not an exact measurement.  If your dryer is taking more time then normal, or the dryer is getting hotter then normal, call a professional immediately.

Regardless how infrequently you may use your dryer, you should have your dryer vent inspected by a professional no less then every 4 years.  This is why we set the parameters of this calculator to not extend recommended times beyond 4 years.

Warning Signs That Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning

To ensure your dryer continues to operate safely and efficiently, recognize these warning signs that may indicate a clogged vent in need of professional cleaning:

    1. Longer Drying Times: If your clothes take longer than usual to dry, it could be a sign that your dryer vents are obstructed and restricting airflow.
    2. Overheating: If your dryer feels hot to touch after use, or if clothes are excessively hot after drying, this may suggest your dryer vents need cleaning.
    3. Burning Smell: A burning smell during dryer operation indicates a potential fire hazard. Lint buildup in the vent could be igniting, so address the issue immediately.
    4. Vent Hood Doesn’t Open: If the dryer duct hood flap doesn’t open, you likely have lint buildup there and in the dryer hose. Clean out the lint or have a professional do it for you.
